Mitt nästa projekt är en båtexpedition till havsnomaderna Urak Lawoi i Andaman Sea. Färden kommer att göras med en traditionell bygd båt som havsnomaderna Moken fortfarande lever på i Burma. Jag kommer att segla längs med Andaman Sea från Burma i norr till Malaysia i söder. Som ensamstående mamma föredrar Lotta självständigt arbete där hon tar eget initiativ. Ofta har hennes arbeten haft anknytning till turism. Lotta känner inspiration av nya uppgifter som hon inte varit i närheten av tidigare och utmanas att bevisa för sig själv att vad som helst går att lära sig. Hon vill inte sitta på ålderdomshemmet och ångra det hon inte har gjort. Intresse för företagande och andra människor har lett till olika utbildningar, Småföretagsekonomisk linje på Växjö Universitet 1985 och filosofie magister i socialantropologi, Lund Universitet 2006. Ann-Charlotte ”Lotta” Granbom är socialantropolog med en av Thailands ursprungsbefolkningar som huvudämne. Som första västerlänning har Lotta bedrivit antropologiska fältstudier hos havsnomaderna Urak Lawoi i Andaman Sea, Thailand. Hennes föreläsningar om globaliseringens effekter på ursprungsbefolkning är uppskattade. Lotta Granbom är född 1961 i Västervik, Småland. Under uppväxtåren flyttade hon mycket med sin familj, från Luleå i norr till Spanien i söder och USA i väst och ön Gotland i öst. I unga år blev det därför naturligt för Lotta att intressera sig för andra kulturer, människor och vad som formar deras idéer och tänkande. Att ständigt flytta tillsammans med sin familj gjorde att hon kände sig som en levande nomad. Lotta började resa tidigt och blev snart en hängiven ryggsäcksresenär. I sin ungdom var hon utbytesstudent och gick ett år på high School i USA. 1984 hade Lotta förmånen att turnera med den internationella gruppen Up With People i ett års tid, där en två timmars lång musik show framförde budskapet, oavsett religion, hudfärg, fattig eller rik har vi lika värde. I tidig ålder startade Lotta eget företag. Den första firman var kiosken Lottas Gottis, en sommarkiosk som Lotta drev från 13 år tills hon slutade gymnasiet. Senare drev Lotta café och tryckeriet Belo. Lotta Granbom är mamma till tre döttrar Malin 21, Ebba-Lotta 19 och Lisa 16. Då barnen var små prioriterade Lotta att tillbringa mycket tid tillsammans med dem antingen det var hemma eller på resande fot. Idag lever Lotta i ett stort hus vid havet tillsammans med två av sina döttrar sedan äldsta dottern flyttat hemifrån. Intresset för havsnomader började för många år sedan då hon av en tillfällighet hörde talas om att det i Sydostasien finns ett havsfolk som lever på sina båtar. Allt eftersom åren gick och barnen blev större kunde hon inte få havsnomaderna ur sina tankar. Efter att ha läst den litteratur Lotta kunde finna om havsnomader ville hon veta mera. Lotta började planera att själv leta upp dem och få fram mera fakta om denna föga kända minoritet. För att få mera ”tyngd” i projektet beslöt Lotta Granbom att studera socialantropologi på Lunds universitet. En stor utmaning, då det innebar att pendla 460 km t o r. Lotta lockades av att bedriva fältstudier hos havsnomader i Indonesien, men hon visste också att där kunde det ta flera månader att finna detta havsfolk. Eftersom Lotta ville ta med sina döttrar fick det praktiska styra valet av fältstudier. Det blev Thailand, även om hon som antropolog tyckte det lät mindre intressant att bedriva fältstudier i det land som svenskar utvalt till sitt populäraste semesterparadis. Valet skulle dock visa sig vara en ”hit” i hennes forskning. Urak Lawoi, den grupp av havsnomader som Lotta valt att forska om fanns nämligen mycket lite skriftligt dokumenterat. Lotta har gjort sex resor till Urak Lawoi och sammanlagt vistats hos dem i 15 månader. Hon startade genast en insamling och återvände sex månader till Urak Lawoi för att bygga nya båtar och reparera hus. De elva komplett utrustade båtarna med motor och propeller har målats i Svenska flaggans färger, och bidragsgivarna har ofta gett båtarna svenska ortsnamn (för mer information se: www.lottagranbom.blogspot.com). The voyage will be made in a traditional boat, still used by the sea nomads, Moken, in Burma. Following the tsunami project, for which the Urak Lawoi (the Sea Nomads) sought me for help, they have now asked to assist with documenting their way of life. For greater understanding and insight to this project I want to live and move as the Sea Nomads used to do; in a traditional boat. Ann-Charlotte (Lotta) Granbom is a Social Anthropologist with one of Thailand’s indigenous people as her major project. Lotta is the first westerner to have done anthropological fieldwork among the sea nomads, the Urak Lawoi, in the Andaman Sea, in Thailand. Her lectures have revived interest in the affects globalisation have on indigenous people. Lotta Granbom was born in Västervik, Sweden, in 1961. While growing up she moved frequently with her family. From Luleå in the north of Sweden they moved south to Spain and later moved to America in the west and Gotland, a Swedish island offs the east coast. To have moved so frequently made Lotta feel like a nomad herself. From an early age it was natural for Lotta to be involved with different people and cultures and what creates the differences between people, their ideas and thinking. Lotta began travelling in her teens, becoming a keen backpacker. In her youth she was also an exchange-student and lived in West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA. In 1984 Lotta was fortunate to travel with the international group, Up With People, for a year. Up With People created two hour on stage musical performances, with the message that regardless of religion, colour of skin, or personal wealth, we are all the same. Lotta ventured into business in an early age. Lotta’s Gottis her first company, being a candy shop, Lotta operated from 13 years old until she finished high school. Later Lotta operated a café and the printing works Belo. Lotta’s interests in business and people and culture have resulted in contrasting educations: Business and Marketing at Växjö University in 1985, and a Masters of Social Science in social anthropology from Lund University in 2006. Lotta Granbom has three daughters: Malin (21), Ebba-Lotta (19) and Lisa (16). Today Lotta lives in a large family house right on the Baltic Sea, together with two of her daughters who still live at home. Lotta’s interest in Sea Nomads started many years ago, when by coincidence she heard that there were people in Southeast Asia who carried their homes on their boats, as nomads of the sea. As her children grew older she couldn’t get the Sea Nomads out of her head. Lotta read all the literature she could find on the Sea Nomads, but she wanted to find out more. She started making plans for an extended field trip. There was so much information she wanted to gather about these people. But first she decided to study anthropology, at Lund University. This was a big challenge as it meant travelling the 460 km back and forth from home. The Sea Nomads, the Urak Lawoi, Lotta has chosen to do researches about were little written information. Lotta has since made six journeys to the Urak Lawoi; altogether she has spent 15 months in their territory. During her visits she has lived in a primitive hut, right on the beach, together with her three daughters. Incredibly, the hut was not swept away by the tsunami that hit Southeast Asia on 26 December, 2004, however the luxury resort built on the same beach did not have the same luck. The Urak Lawoi Sea Nomads talk of two different changes for them: “first the tourist came to the island and then the tsunami”. This book is a field study of the Urak Lawoi, an indigenous people in Thailand, and the consequences for them with rapid tourist development.
